Passion born of desire
A desire to lessen the pain,
And suffering in the world
Bring a ray of hope to the dire.
People, young and old,
Of nationalities diverse,
Battling
Sickness’ hold.
Doctors, nurses, healthcare workers,
Standing like soldiers against
The enemy armed. Needles, medicines
To counter death’s lethal curse.
Courage in the face of death and
With God at our backs, holding the
Lives of people in our hands
We will fight everyone to the last man.
Battles won more often than lost.
Lives snatched from our hands, occasionally
Drawing us along for the ride too,
Martyrs for the cause.
Payment not in coin or in kind
But the smile of a crying child,
A cancer survivor’s hope fulfilled, when
The lame walk and the blind see just fine.
What man or woman strong
Yet weak, can such a difference make,
Authority to give and take as well as
Change lives for right or wrong.
SARS, avian flu, epidemics rampant,
Dependent upon us to tame.
A race against time; testing.
Striving until we are finally triumphant.
Like Aaron, Moses’ brother,
Standing between the living and
The dead, to stop the plague.
Thus are we called hither.
Ambulance sirens wailing,
Red lights stropping,
Lives in the balance, in our
Expert hands entrusted, waiting.
People laid low by stroke,
Nothing to look forward to but
Humiliation and pain, lovingly nursed
To health and in hope everlasting soak.
Staring at life severely curtailed by
Cancer, helpless and without hope,
Under knife, medicine and radiation,
Emerge strong to expose death’s lie.
Unresponsive, Heart surrendering
Without a fight, oblivion beckons.
Never concede defeat, technology servant,
Resuscitate and into the light bring.
Athletes once at the peak, now
Broken, injury shattering
Dreams and hopes, again riding
On my shoulders unbowed.
Accident claim the mother, unborn
Child trapped, grieving husband, glimmer
Of hope turned joy, child liberated,
United family, a new dawn.
Lives transformed, enriched, extended,
Bliss in various forms bestowed,
What more can we ask, what greater
Honour but workers of healthcare united.
Passion born of desire
A desire to lessen the pain,
And suffering in the world
Bring a ray of hope to the dire.
